| Binh Tay Market in District 6 plays an important role in circulating goods from HCM City to the southwestern provinces and vice versa. It is also called New Big Market, or Quach Dam Market, for it was built by a Chinese trader, Quach Dam, in 1928 on an area of 20,000 square meters. Later, he gave the market to the then authorities, and in turn he asked for shops on the two sides of the market and erected a bronze statue of himself at the market gate.
Ben Thanh Market
in District 1 is of special significance, for it is one of the famous sites of the former Saigon, as well as the present-day Ho Chi Minh City. According to Vuong Hong Sen, author of the book "Saigon of the Past", in 1912, the French filled a pond (the Boresse) into a solid foundation of 12,000 square meters and built a market on it. The market was close to a landing stage (Ben) of the old city (Thanh), hence its name of Ben Thanh. The opening ceremony for the market in March 1914 was a big festive eve
